So why do I have 2,000 finger puppets in my house?
I’m so glad you asked.
Last year I carried through with my belief that puppets have a really important part to play in engaging children in storytelling. Not only that but they also help us find out if they have understood a story and supports them in making their own.
I joined with The Puppet Company and now the Vlad Flea finger puppet lives (in my house)! There’s more detail about all this in my free post on the Reading Riddle substack.

The latest reading post is about find things to read with your child without breaking the bank.
It's all very well saying you should read lots of different things and find books that excite your child, but how do you do that in an affordable way?
Post 3 is about doing that, some free options, others involve a bit of creative thinking, sharing with others and thinking about gifts on birthdays etc.
Ideas and links are on https://readingriddle.substack.com and the video version is on the Reading Riddle YouTube channel.

I wonder how this affected a young William Shakespeare when he woke up to this on his bedroom wall?
I’m always excited to learn something new and when I went to Shakespeare’s house in Stratford-upon-Avon this summer I discovered a mind blowing fact about Tudor decor. It’s really got me thinking about ways to make old draughty British housing look nice without the constant fight with damp.
This is a very small bit of a larger wall hanging and I talk about it and why it sounds such a great idea on the latest post on https://readingriddle.substack.com/

The latest post on www.readingriddle.substack is about Word Mats. One of the first resources I make for each book is this illustrated sheet covering key vocabulary. It's such a useful tool to ensure children understand and have a handy prompt for topic work and literacy. My thoughts and the link is on the substack otherwise you can find the free resources on the Reading Riddle website.

Phew, That post took a lot longer than expected!

Over the years I’ve created a lot of free resources around this topic and every time I find out more, I want to share it. Once a teacher, always a teacher.

Please share this - the time I’ve spent could be saved by many teachers, which would make it all worthwhile.

The post is available for free on www.readingriddle.substack and lists all the plans, resources and activities and where to find them. It was great fun looking over them again and I have a few more up my sleeve to add over the weekend.

I will be posting about our books and ways to use them every Friday, history fun on Sunday and advice to parents about reading on Wednesday.

The reading post on our substack on Wednesday was about studies and evidence about the importance of reading with young children.
In these reading posts I am aiming to share the information that can help parents find ways to support their children with practical information about the whys and hows.
Next week I'll be posting about Reading for Pleasure - what it means and how to help your child find the reading material that interests them - with a free resource to trigger ideas.
If you are a parent, or a teacher that wants information to share with your pupils' parents, the posts are free and you can subscribe to get them sent to your inbox each week:

Every week I'll be posting on our new substack and there will be a pattern to the posts.
Sunday will be posts about things I've found out whilst researching or mudlarking. They are a fun read on a weekend.
Wednesday will be posts about reading with children - the whys, hows and wherefores of helping your youngsters grow to be engaged and enthusiastic readers.
Friday is resources day - ideas, practical things like planning or activities that spring from the Reading Riddle books and aim to make learning fun.
If you are a parent and/or teacher, or if you simply enjoy history, these posts aim to add to that experience.
If you want to make sure you get them in your inbox you can subscribe to the substack www.readingriddle.substack.com and check out the posts already on the page.
Today's history fun is 'persistence, patience and pipes'.
Next week's posts will cover the statistics and evidence relating to children and reading (Weds) and a rundown of the many resources linked to Vlad and the Great Fire of London (Fri)

The latest Reading Riddle substack post will be up first thing tomorrow morning with a new mind map of the history and literacy links in Benji and the Gunpowder Plot. It point to areas that the story supports in understanding this period, and links to resources about the plotters, their relationships to one another and where the action happened in London.

It's the first in a few posts signposting teaching and learning resources. So if you want to see what you can use to support history, reading and writing follow along and sign up for free posts.

My first mudlarking pin from the Thames foreshore!
It's not been through lack of searching, but up until now pins seem to have evaded me - until I saw this beauty, like King Arthur's sword it was upright sticking out about 3 cm from the mud.
Of course, I was too excited to stop and take a photo before pulling it out!
Pins were used for centuries to keep clothes and headscarves in place and were handmade in huge numbers.
Elizabeth I apparently had to spend 2 hours a day getting pinned into the layers of her clothes and the expression 'pin money' comes from the many women who made pins at home to supplement the family income (obviously spending many hours on a job for relatively low return).
My target now is to find more, different pins and ideally a pinner's bone which was used to sharpen the metal wire into a sharp point.
If you want to find out more there I am using the Reading Riddle substack to write longer pieces about mudlarking, history research and craft activities related to my finds.
